Roofing Wenonah

Built to the paper, not the promise

Wenonah Roofing Installed to the Written Spec

The strongest thing a roof can carry is a document issued by somebody other than the contractor. On the borough’s older houses off Mantua Avenue that counts for more than anything said in the driveway.

The work

What we are called out for

Seven things, which is all a residential roofer in this borough honestly needs to be good at.

  • A field of new shingle courses across a roof slope

    Roof Replacement

A new covering installed to the maker’s own specification, with their paper behind it.

    See the page

  • A split and lifted section of roof covering

    Roof Repair

One fault dealt with, with the covering around it left exactly as it is.

  • Damp staining spread across a surface below a roof leak

    Roof Leak Repair

Finding where the water enters, which is rarely above where it appears.

  • A roof covering damaged across a whole slope

    Storm & Hail Damage

  • Roof timbers and boarding seen from inside an attic

    Roof Inspections

An hour spent working out what this particular house will take.

  • Dormers clad in shingle siding on a steep roof

    Siding

The cladding a roofer should be touching, and the parts we hand on.

    Gutters & Downspouts

The idea

Why we keep talking about paperwork

Most roofing promises are personal. A man stands in your driveway, says he will look after you, and means it. Five years later the company has a different name, a different phone number or no number at all, and the promise has quietly expired with it.

A manufacturer does not go anywhere. Build a roof out of one maker’s components, in the order and the pattern they publish, and the cover that results belongs to a company with a factory rather than a truck. That is the whole argument, and it decides almost every choice we make on a job.

Why this one

What you get that you might not elsewhere

Four things, each of which costs us something, which is how you can tell they are real.

  • Cover that outlives us

A roof installed the way GAF specify can qualify for their Golden Pledge Warranty, the strongest cover they issue. It is held by the manufacturer, not by us.

  • Fifty years on the shingles

The covering itself carries a fifty-year warranty backed directly by the people who made it. That is a different document from anything a contractor signs, and it does not depend on us answering the phone.

  • System components throughout

Starter, leak barrier, underlayment, hip and ridge all from the same range, because substituting one cheap part is the usual reason a cover turns out not to apply.

  • Ventilation treated as roofing

Intake and exhaust balanced and recorded, since the specification counts airflow as part of the roof rather than an extra somebody sells you afterwards.

How it runs

What actually happens, in order

  1. 1

    You ring and describe it

Whatever is visible from the pavement will do. Nobody expects you to work out the cause first.

  2. 2

    The free inspection

An hour on the roof and in the loft, both sides checked against each other, no charge and nothing booked off the back of it.

  3. 3

    A written figure

Line by line, with the specification named, so you can see exactly which components are in the price.

  4. 4

    The work, in order

Strip, deck made good, membrane, metalwork, covering, ventilation. Opened and closed the same day throughout.

  5. 5

    The documents

Registration goes in, and the paperwork that results comes to you rather than sitting in a filing cabinet here.

The inspection is free, it comes with a written figure, and nothing is booked at the end of it unless you want it to be.

Questions

The things people ask before they book

What does a manufacturer-backed warranty actually cover?

Broadly, the covering and the way it was put on, for a term set by the maker rather than the installer. The exact terms come from the manufacturer and we will give you the document rather than paraphrase it, because paraphrasing a warranty is how people end up disappointed.

Who honours it if you stop trading?

That is precisely the point of it. Cover issued by a manufacturer sits with the manufacturer. A contractor’s own promise, however sincerely given, stops when the contractor does.

Does it move with the house if I sell?

Most manufacturer cover is transferable at least once, usually within a window after the sale and sometimes for a small fee. We will tell you the terms for your specific covering before you commit to anything.

Is the inspection really free?

Yes, and nothing is booked at the end of it. People take the notes and do nothing for two years fairly often. That is a perfectly reasonable thing to do with them.

Can a repair carry the same cover?

No, and anyone saying otherwise is selling you something. Manufacturer cover attaches to a complete system installed to specification. A repair buys you years at a fraction of the price, which is usually the better deal, but it comes without the paper.

What if the deck underneath is bad?

We count the sheets with you before any are cut and the rate is on the estimate from the start. Nobody discovers a number halfway through a Tuesday.

What paperwork do I end up holding?

The written estimate, the specification the roof was built to, photographs of the deck before it was covered, and the warranty documents once registration comes back. It lives in a folder in your house, not ours.

Do I need to be home for the work?

For the inspection it helps, because the loft is half of it. For the installation itself, no. Most people go to work and come home to a finished roof.

About

Four people who would rather do fewer roofs

We are not the cheapest quote on most driveways and we have stopped trying to be. The specification costs more in components and more in time, and it is the only version of the job we are interested in doing.
